Road Accidents In Kenya

Road safety refers to the methods used to prevent road users from being killed or seriously injured. It can also be described as measures taken to reduce casualties and fatalities in road traffic crashes.

Road accidents are one of the world's largest public health and injury prevention problems this is because victims of road accidents are healthy before they get involved in an accident. Each year nearly 1.3 million people die as a result of car accidents while more than 3000 people die every day from road accidents. Twenty to fifty million people sustain non-fatal injuries from a collision, and these injuries cause disabilities to the casualties.

According to a survey done by NTSA, about of 3,000 people lose their lives on the road every year with more than twice this number suffering from life-long injuries. Moreover, approximately one-third of deaths are among passengers many of whom are killed in dangerous forms of public transport. Those affected by road accidents are within the productive age bracket of 15 to 44 years.

An annual report done by the Kenya National Police Service noted that the causes of accidents include speeding, drunk-driving, fatigue, wrong use of the roads done by pedestrians, poor road infrastructure, overloading, dangerous overtaking, non-observance of traffic laws and corruption done by traffic police as they take bribes and allow damaged vehicles to carry passengers. Lack of strict enforcement of traffic laws and vehicle violation enable drivers to violate the road laws. The more the drivers are aware that they are constantly getting away with breaking the rules and not getting caught, the more the other drivers follow suit. A lot of traffic rules are violated and minimum enforcement is done by the traffic police.
